PAWS has taken the initiative to end the sale of puppies and kittens in Ottawa, Canada's capital city. Please take a moment to email this letter, modify it or create your own and send it to the Mayor and cc all councillors (email addresses included below). Let's shut sales down to work towards ending puppy mills.
Please encourage all rescues and shelters to share this on their facebook pages. Thank you!
Dear Mayor Watson:
Re: Banning the Sale of Companion Animals in Ottawa Pet Stores and Retail Outlets
I am writing to you in support of banning the sale of companion animals in Ottawa pet stores and retail outlets.
Pet store and retail outlet puppies are mass-produced in puppy mills in inhumane environments, where the health and welfare of the animals are not a priority. The sole motivation is breeding for profit.
Pet stores and retail outlets are the retail arm of puppy mills, and are the most visible sales medium for substandard, high volume breeders. Currently, there are four (4) Ottawa pet stores that sell puppies, none of whom will reveal their source to the consuming public. They use persuasive selling techniques and provide broadly ambiguous information, leading the public to believe that these puppies come from a reputable source when, in fact, NO reputable breeder sells their puppies through pet stores or retail outlets.
I share the belief that Ottawa, the nation’s capital, should assume a leading positive role in demonstrating social and ethical leadership in consumer protection and animal welfare issues, as has been undertaken in many other Canadian cities.
I fully support the passing of the following by-law:
Prohibit the sale of all companion animals in pet stores and retail outlets;
(with the exception of those participating in a satellite adoption program in collaboration with local rescue and/or shelter groups.
