After sadly putting down our two aggressive rescue Pyrs, Ben and Mr. Lou, and the passing of Clara, it was with great trepidation that we took Zeetie. That trepidation has long since disappeared. She has turned out to be more than we could have hoped for. And now Max is part of our family. He is the cutest and smartest little monkey, and the two of them are the best of friends.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comBlogger186125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8849093557311022207.post-77364390499522954502021-11-24T13:32:00.006-05:002023-02-10T13:13:52.028-05:00Recallers! We adopted Badger in September 2018. He was supposed to be a great friendly dog with people and other dogs. He was neither.
I signed up for Recallers.
That program is the best training program ever. Criminal proceedings against Dr. Mahavir Rekhi have been deferred until the end of this summer. His legal team needs time of study more than 1,000 pages of evidence against him. Deferred
16 charges have been laid again Dr. Reiki by the OSPCA. He will appear in court on July 14, 2017.

A ten-month suspension for Dr. Mahavir Singh Rekhi? UPDATE: Dr. Mahavir Sing Rekhi, Skyway Animal Hospital in St. Catharines, Ontario, is back practising after only a 5-month suspension.

If you have concerns about the 10-month suspension of c, please write the CVA and let them know your thoughts. We pay good money to our vets for what is supposed to be top notch care and the CVA hands out a 10-month suspension to an animal abuser.

He should never be allowed to go near another animal in his life. If he does, it needs to be posted that the Canadian Veterinary Asssociation gave Dr. Mahavir Singh Rekhi a 10-month suspension for abusing, including punching and choking, his patients.

Let the CVO know a 10-month suspension is not acceptable and that his licence must be revoked.
I had this response to my letter:

Hello, Donna,

The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association was deeply disturbed with the video footage that we saw from the Skyway Animal Hospital in Ontario. We share the sentiment that rings true for all provincial veterinary associations, that the handling of animals shown in the video footage is in no way a reflection of what takes place in the broader veterinary profession.

In Canada, licensing for veterinary medicine is the responsibility of the provincial regulatory body. The provincial veterinary authority in Ontario is the College of Veterinarians of Ontario and we are aware that their Discipline Committee has taken action in this case as was reported (temporary suspended license with specific requirements for retraining).

Any comments or concerns regarding the decision reached by CVO in this matter should be directed to the college:
He has become the guardian of these livestock along with Bobby who was also adopted from us many years ago. Riley will be taking over from Daisy, who was adopted with Bobby, as she is working towards retirement. He has turned out to be a natural fit in his role as guardian. We are so happy for this boy!

We had a visitor arrive. He overnighted here before he continued on his journey to southern Ontario.

First, I want to send out, as always, a heartfelt thank you to Daniel for bringing him in. And, to Chrystal and Craig for doing the final two legs.

What an absolute joy Riley has been. His people obviously did a lot of work with him. He has no reaction to cars, people or kids walking or biking past him. We've seen a couple of smaller dogs. He's only wanted to say hello, so far. Apparently, he did react to a larger breed dog so time will tell.

As is typical of the first night with a dog coming into care, he barked at a few noises and he couldn't settle. However, when I awoke, he was sound asleep in the closet. He was one tired boy. This agitation dissipates as the dog becomes accustomed to his new surroundings and his people over the weeks. Remember, these dogs' lives have been turned upside down.

As one always has to do with a new dog coming in, I have kept him attached to me the whole time. He has not yet been neutered and will lift his leg as he desires. There have been no issues on that front. You also know nothing about the new dog, and they know nothing about you. You don't know each others' reaction to anything. It takes time to gain a mutual trust and respect so keeping the leash means safety for both you and the dog.

I've brushed him, done his nails and trimmed his paws a bit.

As an unneutered male (soon to be neutered), Ziti respects him from a distance. She is not ready to have him close
to her but she hasn't put up any fuss. Sadly, he will be moving onto the
rest of his journey to foster so they will not have the opportunity to
play together. Max wants nothing to do with him, as is typical.
He does not like to share Ziti.

He's a gangly year-old and will fill in nicely as he matures. I think he would be about 85 pounds at the moment.
PET STORE BYLAW - April 13, 2016

Today, Ottawa City Council voted 21 to 3 to amend Bylaw 2011-241 with
respect to restricting the sale of cats and dogs sold for profit in
Ottawa pet stores and retail outlets.

A five year transition period to an adoption-only model for Ottawa pet stores will take effect.

As well, a 48 hour cooling off period on purchases will take effect.
This is to protect both consumers and animals in the case of consumers
who buy on impulse and then experience buyers remorse.
In
addition, pet stores will be required to provide, at the time of
purchase, all breeder information to customers who purchase a dog or a
cat.

We commend the 21 Councillors and Mayor for their support of
this amendment and thank them for their efforts. We would like to
particularly commend Councillors Leiper, McKenney, Brockington and
Fleury for their passionate advocacy on this issue at Council today.

Rideau-Goulbourn Ward Councillor Scott Moffatt opposed all motions,
proving that he is not concerned about the welfare and protection of
animals.

There is still much work to be done and we encourage
everyone to continue using their voice to promote education and
awareness for all the animals that continue to suffer in mills at the
hands of human cruelty.

We also encourage the last three (3) pet
stores who continue to sell cats and dogs for profit to embrace a more
ethical and responsible business model before the five year transition
period expires, and to join the 51 Ottawa pet stores who already enjoy
success with a better business model.

The room was overflowing into the corridors. Supporters from Quebec and Cambridge came, too.

Please email councillors with your say on their recommendations. Councillors vote on April 13th at City Hall. Your attendance is welcome to show your support.

Here is a sample letter:

I urge councillors to take into consideration the following measures:

Reinstate rabbits in the by-law – they are also sourced from anonymous irresponsible backgrounds;

Reduce the transition time to two (2) years but preferably to a few months, instead of five (5) years.

The transition period for the following Canadian cities was:

Toronto 12 months

Kingston 3 months

Mississauga 6 months

Waterloo 4 months

The city-wide smoking ban was implemented in fewer than four (4) months. It impacted many more businesses, and they transitioned successfully.

Over 4,000 people in favour of the ban, including myself, do not shop at those three (3) pet stores because they sell dogs, cats and rabbits.

Follow the adoption model presently in place for the other over 50 pet stores.

In the meantime, during the transitioning phase, consider these measures:

Ensure that pet stores publicly display the name and location of all providers of animals. Any ethical/reputable breeder is proud to show you their animals, where they live, and educate you on their care and if that breed is suitable for your family.

The three (3) pet shops claim all of their breeders are licensed and reputable, but they refuse to provide verifiable evidence to consumers.

Consumers have to be confident that they are *not* purchasing a pet sourced from a puppy, kitten or rabbit mill, and there is no evidence to prove this at present. Again, no reputable ethical breeder will ever sell to pet stores.

Introduce a mandatory cooling off period for all potential consumers so they take home a pet ONLY after a 48-hour period after signing a contract of purchase which will be refundable should a consumer reconsider their decision after the 48-hours.

This will address the impulse buying of these sentient beings, and, help prevent unwanted animals at the shelters and rescues and from being dumped.

Publicly display by-law and regulatory services information, in the event of public complaints.

Please take into the account the welfare of these animals. You've heard the stories from professionals, including a veterinarian, people who have worked in pet stores, volunteers with rescues and shelters, and recipients of pet store animals.

Over 93% of Ottawa residents support an immediate outright ban during the public consultations. Please, listen to our voices.

We must convince our councillors that this is the right thing to do. Shutting down the sale of pets in pet stores and retail outlets means another avenue closed to millers.

Deadline for comments is Monday, February 29, 2016

City of Ottawa Pet Shop [Retail Outlet] By-law Review

For those who signed up by e-mail, you have already received the link directly from the City of Ottawa.

The City questionnaire represents an online public consultation, and is one of the most important steps in the process. If only 10 people respond, this issue will not be taken seriously.

There are only 2 options:

We have agreed with option 1 with supporting comments.

We have refused Option 2 for the below mentioned reasons:

If you agree with these comments, feel free to take them and implement them into your own response.

****
Option 2 is not a reasonable option and will not be supported by PAWS for the following reasons****
:

More monitoring of the pet stores does not address the sourcing issue. Many sources are from outside the City of Ottawa limits, and, therefore, fall outside the scope of the city's jurisdiction to enforce. This is done deliberately by stores to avoid enforcement. This is already an issue under the current bylaw, where stores produce papers that the City of Ottawa has no jurisdiction to verify or validate.

It presumes that the sources for these pet stores are reputable breeders. First, the sources are never reputable as CKC breeders are prohibited from selling to pet stores. Secondly, papers may be produced by the store, but this does not validate whether a breeder is ethical or responsible. Even if the papers are legitimate, they only confirm that a breeder has a licence from whatever municipality they are located in, to breed non-CKC animals.

This approach will involve additional areas for compliance and impose a significant additional workload on city bylaw staff. The City currently investigates only on a complaint basis and, as the City has stated, they have had no complaints. A proactive approach will require additional city resources, both personnel and financial. With current City of Ottawa budgetary pressures, it is highly unlikely that more money would be allocated for this, whereas option 1 will save the city money, time and resources.

Therefore, while seeking to impose greater obligations and controls on pet stores, it is likely not feasible that bylaw officials have the capacity to meet this new mandate.

Continuing to sell animals in retail outlets does not address other key issues:

To stop the impulse purchase of pets;

Reduce the breeding of animals from substandard breeders while thousands languish and suffer, and are euthanized en masse at taxpayer funded shelters.

The City of Ottawa has no jurisdiction over online or newspaper sales of pets. By continuing to actively allow retail sales of pets in city licensed stores, the City is effectively promoting and condoning these sales, and is complicit in the ongoing proliferation of breeding animals for profit.

As more surrounding municipalities continue to favour legislation in support of banning the sale of pets in pet stores, Ottawa runs the very high risk of becoming the dumping ground for substandard breeders to offload their animals, increasing the problem exponentially.

It's 2016. The fact that puppy mills/backyard breeders even exist is appalling. Dogs are sentient beings as are all animals.

Marlee was acquired from a farmer. Her person 'sold' her at eight months due to changes in her life. The person who acquired her then surrendered her to us due to allergies. We are very glad to have her. Unfortunately, she spent her six months with this woman, when outside, tied up by her pronged collar. The woman didn't know any better, I don't think. This is cruelty. Marlee had such good ground work in her life that she hasn't been affected by it.
Thankfully, she was well-cared for by her first person. She sure knows her sit and down. The little liver treats do wonders. She is a lovebug. She is a very happy girl at 14-months old. She is about 80 pounds.

I took the prong off her right away and put another collar on her. I put the harness on to walk her since I couldn't tell how sensitive her neck was although she seemed okay. The red tinge around her scruff is a give away to the metal that was on her neck.

Her eyes already have a bit of red staining in the corners. I'm not sure why. Perhaps the food she was on.

When she came in the house, she was just a happy girl although, of course, stressed. She didn't sleep very well but when she did, she was out like a light. Hence, I got little sleep. Everytime I got onto the couch, she became very stimulated and got up with me but all over me. I had to get her back off and she settled in, again.
Up in the morning to get ready for her transport to her potential adopters in Southern Ontario. We walked until she pooped. We came back and she ran like crazy in the yard. What a girl!
Oh, yes, I did my usual nail trimming since they probably hadn't been done in six months. Especially the dew claws. A little dried liver and the dews were done. I needed some help which wasn't available right away to complete the rest of the nails but I did at least five others. Good girl, Marlee Mae.

She had a little to eat, drink and into the car she went.

Her potential adopters have much Pyr experience and fell in love with Marlee at first photo. I have spoken at length with them via Skype and they will provide the perfect home for this little girl. She has a Golden and a Rottie friend with whom to play and a beautiful securely fenced yard. She will also be spayed and micro-chipped by them which is extremely generous.

*UPDATE* With Chrystal and Susan running tandem transport, she arrived to her new family. She has fit in beautifully in her new home. She went crazy playing with her new dog friends. Went for a walk with them and then went into a deep sleep. It's always such a huge day for a rescue dog going it a new home.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8849093557311022207.post-78225776865045755702015-12-16T06:03:00.003-05:002016-01-25T05:13:42.032-05:00MillieAdopted.

Millie comes in. Zeetie stands at the gate and stares, waiting for the moment of eye contact so she can bark and growl at Millie through the gate. She wants to make sure Millie knows this is her house. I tell Zeetie to go lie down. She looks at me, slowly turns away and waits. I tell her, again. She grumbles and lies down ensuring she has a full view of Millie. Millie just wants to say hi.
This little girl came in from Nali Animal Orphanage and overnighted with us. Chrystal took her onto her foster in Southern Ontario the next day.

Naturally, she was very stressed with all the changes in her life. However, she did sleep right through the night right beside me. She was exhausted.

Millie was found wandering down the road. Nali took Millie in and subsequently adopted her out.

She only stopped panting heavily once in bed.

She went back to Nali after her barking, as so often happens, became too much for the neighbours after a year. They asked us to take her.

She is three years old and a small girl at about 75 pounds. She isn't great on a leash but that will come with time. She criss-crosses all over the place but I'll guess she didn't get walked a lot in her previous life.

I clipped her nails and did some grooming. Her previous people had probably had her shaven more than once rather than groom her. No decent groomer would have done this. NEVER shave a double-coated dog. They need their coats to stay warm in winter and cool in summer. If you don't like grooming or can't afford a groomer, do not get this breed.

I can see her going to a family who makes her part of their lives which means taking her in the car for trips with them (in conducive weather), lots of walks, hiking, play time with other dogs, and having her sleep at least in the same room with them.

It will be nice when her coat grows back in, never to be shaven, again. Regular grooming is so important for these dogs. You can find out how to adopt her here: Great Pyrenees Club of Southern Ontario

This lovely girl has come back in. She was originally rescued by the Great Pyrenees Club of Southern Ontario and
adopted out. Unfortunately, the people didn't pay attention to the
adoption contract and gave her to someone else. That person then surrendered her to someone else who then contacted us.

She is around six years old and what a wonderful energy she has. She is good on a leash.

This girl is extremely territorial of a home she has deemed hers in a matter of seconds. She needs an animal-free home since she is very protective
of her space. She is aloof to dogs on the street at the moment. I would
recommend no dog parks for her. She is quite happy being with herself
and her people.

We get into a routine with new dogs coming in. The gate goes up in the kitchen to separate everyone until there is acceptance. Well, it's not going to happen in this case.

I was in the kitchen with Gypsy. Don in the living room with Zeetie. We were making sure there wasn't going to be any nonsense. In a nano second, Zeetie came over to stare at Gypsy. I went to grab Gypsy but I was too late. The gate was down and the fight was on. Well, I think Gypsy had it in the can since she jumped on Ziti's back and bit her neck. She is a stocky girl with much weight to her.

The next day, she got to Max and leapt onto his back and bit his neck. Poor little guy. She traumatized him. He pretty much lives in the car except at night when we make him come into the house.

There are constant outbreaks when I just forget about the two of them. Zeetie outside and Gypsy inside. I forget to close the kitchen gate so those two can't eyeball each other through the sliding glass doors at the back. I fear they are both so strong that the doors will slide under the weight of them on either side trying to fight it out through the glass.

The crate went up and she does just fine in there during the day. She gets out a few times before she gets her afternoon walk.

Unfortunately, she has been shaven and I'm guessing more than once. We bathed her and trimmed her nails. She won't have enough of a coat to be out long in the winter without a coat. We can only hope it will grow back with time.

She is fine with people coming into her house when they are invited. And, she is fine with people on the street but, again, as a typical Pyr is aloof towards them.

She does well in the crate. Until she settles into a home, a crate is preferable for her since she can better relax and feel safe.

She doesn't appear to have spent much time alone in a fenced yard. She likes hanging out with her people wherever they are as she is very affectionate to us.

She loves her raw food.

She found herself a toy of sorts. It's the head off a stuffed and colourful ant-type creature. She gets pretty excited playing with it.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8849093557311022207.post-71392908084172942352015-09-18T06:10:00.001-04:002015-11-20T05:55:08.636-05:00Miss EffieADOPTED

Effie used to be on a farm in Picton. The sheep farm closed up due to a divorce. People outside of Ottawa took Ellie and her son. Her people did have her spayed.

This sweetie is 5-years old. For two years, her former people tried to make her a working dog but she wasn't having it. She kept running away. She even got out over and under the fencing with a tire tied to her. Remember, if your dog isn't interested in working within three months, you now have a companion dog.

This little girl is about 50 pounds. She is low-ranked and wants nothing to do with other dogs, so far. She tries to leave the scene, tail between her legs. I couldn't image her defending a flock from coyotes.

I bathed her first because she smelled of sheep manure since that was a little hard to work with. Once dried, I groomed her for three hours. She was full of mats. She was so good and just lay there. Farmers seem to think that because a dog works and is outside all the time that they don't need to be groomed. On the contrary. Mats are very painful the thicker they get, and the more they pull at the skin when the dog moves.

A harsh word should never be spoken to this girl. With any dog, only positive-reinforcement methods should ever be used.

She has such a lovely smile. She soaks in any petting and her eyes squint in delight.

Miss Moushy is such a sweetheart. She is the epitome of a Pyr, so far. She is aloof and barks at squirrels and birds. She is a high-ranked female.

An animal rescue worked heard to rescue her from an elderly lady who had fallen ill. Finally, they brought her in, and asked if Great Pyr Rescue would take her. Indeed, we would.

Zeetie has been pretty awesome. She takes less time each time we bring a dog in. Moushy does not react, at all, to the silliness of Max and Zeetie's objections.

She is absolutely the epitome of a Pyr. She barks at anything deemed a threat and is aloof. She is in good shape for 9-years old. Her hips are a little weak, however. She has been shaven in the past. Time will tell if her full coat will come back. She is being vetted this weekend.

Make sure you do your research on the Pyr. They are not for most people.

She has already been bathed, nails trimmed, hairy feet trimmed, ears cleaned and blown dry. What a good girl.

She hasn't been posted, yet, but if you are interested in this girl, please fill out the adoption application

Nothing like exercise to have him learn how to deal with life. And, the bonus is that Zeetie is very good with him.

Ziti has mellowed somewhat.

It’s only been just over three weeks and his scratching has subsided already. The raw diet is working its magic along with the drugs, as he needs them. It will take up to three months for the residue of the kibble to leave his system.

I tried not crating him when I left the house for work but apparently, he paced and paced. So, back in the crate where he feels safe, and will go to sleep after five minutes of howling. He does need to go out for a pee after four hours or so.

It’s so important that anyone who comes in the house or meets him on the street NOT put their hands out to him. They need to just ignore him so he can sniff you out on his terms. I explain to people what to do but out goes their hand, and he backs up and will lunge and snap if someone insists on doing it. I told them.

How do you feel when a complete stranger reaches out to touch you and run their hand across you before you’ve even given them an acknowledgment? What is your first reaction? Social etiquette is usually that you speak to someone first and read body and facial language to find out where you stand with someone else. You wouldn’t even consider touching them. The same goes for dogs.
I had stupidly made that mistake when the car opened and I put my hand in to say hello to him when he first arrived at our house. He backed off. So did I. I should have known better.
The neighbour’s dog has noticed the new kid on the block and start barking through the fence. Jasper was over at the fence in a moment. It’s the only side of the fence that has slats where they can see each other other and nose each other. And, the snow is high enough that he can stand with his front paws on top of the fence. Things got a little heated between them since the other dog is not at all socialized, and spends his time tied up and maybe walked once a week if he’s lucky.
He doesn't have to follow us everytime we get up.

If I didn't already have two dogs and had more time, wow, this cutie patootie would be staying with me.

We keep him upstairs with us at night so he doesn't get into mischief. He's a 115 pound puppy who is now getting to live his puppyhood. He loves to throw his toys around and play with balls. He gets into all sorts if there is something for him to get into. He is very good with his nose and can open garbage lids, doors and gates if required. The counter is still the beholder of interesting things for him but as I sit here, he is upstairs and all is quiet. We have small breakthroughs everyday.

He made friends with some neighbours and spent his time on his back looking for belly rubs. There was also an 18-year old Golden Retriever with whom he wanted to play. The old guy sure wanted to play and is in great shape for his age but big boy is just a little too big and full of beans for him.

He isn't big on the post person and it was all I could do to hang onto him in the dark of the evening. Whereas Zeetie loves the post person since our former one (our neighbour) used to give every dog she saw treats. I'm going to find out if she has anything leftover that might make her look like the post person and do some training.

He still needs to be watched when he sees people. I take his collar (leverage is too difficult with the leash) in my hand loosely and talk to him and keep him moving. I haven't had issues for the last couple of days (except for the post person which was not pretty). He will look and move on. We do not want to set this guy up for failure.

He needs someone who will take him on long walks everywhere and anywhere to adjust to the business of the world and anything deemed new to him. He requires continued socialization with strangers. And, getting to play with other dogs will be just perfect for him.

We have had no peeing in the house. We continue to crate him when we are away for his safety. He is crated no more than four hours at a time. He hasn't had to go out in the middle of the wee hours to pee except for last night. I forgot to take the water up after our evening walk.

He will howl when we leave the house for at least five minutes. As a Pyr, he is a big barker at all things deemed unknown out there.

I never thought I'd say this of Zeetie but she has been a good mentor for him regarding reaction to people. She loves people and he isn't sure about them on the streets.
I wouldn't have been able to help my dogs or our foster dogs without her wealth of experience and knowledge. Jade Hill has also been instrumental in helping me with my foster dogs.

I should know better by now. It takes at least two to three weeks for a dog to destress from moving into a new home. This is an excerpt from the website profile for him:

He really is just a good dog, one you don't ever have to worry about.

Such a handsome mountain dog.

Okay, so, this boy is not so perfect afterall. His imperfections are coming through as the days unfold. He lunges at people, as he did at Chrystal when his people brought him up from the basement for her to take. From what I can tell, he hasn't had a lot of exposure to people and is unsure of them. What a lousy time of year for clicker training. I'll settle for getting his attention before he goes over the top.

What a slinky.

Mr. Jasper is proving to be quite the counter-surfer. He did it once while we were there, and I let him know this was not acceptable. As smart dogs do, now he only does it when we're not there. I hope he enjoyed that pound of butter. Silly humans leaving edibles on the counter. Who is training whom? Some pots and pans at the edge of the counter will solve this problem. He'll jump up and the pots will come clattering down, scaring him.

He will pee in the house. He gives a little cry and if you don't pay attention, he goes to another room to pee. He needs to be crated during the day to avoid this and walked at noon. He does not have a bladder infection. I'm pretty sure he was left in his basement and he had to pee down there (judging by his smell) in his former home. A little housetraining is in order although you just need to pay attention to his cry. When he does pee outside, praise him. It won't take long.

He is quite the athlete!

He was supposed to have been surrendered because he was strong on his leash but he is actually quite good on his leash. He does wander to and fro in front of me but that is something that is easily remedied with time.

He does howl when we leave the house (the howl comes from the Husky with whom he used to live). I will be leaving a frozen Kong full of goodies to keep him busy. It's all about him learning the routine of a new home. It's a lot to take on for any dog to be removed from a home of a number of years into a new one.
As for Zeetie, I am so proud of her. I've kept him out of the bedroom since she has warned him off on a few occasions. When I came out of the bathroom, and this is only on the morning of day 3, no Jasper to be seen. I walked to the bedroom and there he was, wandering around in there. No reaction from Zeetie who was in her place on the bed. I think she has put a 'No Threat' sign around his neck which certainly makes life easier for us.
